The stock market today, September 8, 2026, opened lower. The BSE Sensex fell 344.54 points, which’s a drop of 0.45%, to close at 75,788.27. At the time, the NSE Nifty 50 lost 87 points or 0.37% and ended at 23,692.

The Indian rupee also weakened in early trading. The currency slipped 10 paise to 94.66 against the US dollar as investors reacted to higher crude prices and uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict.

Foreign investor activity remains another concern for domestic equities. Foreign institutional investors sold Indian shares worth ₹3,111.94 crore on Friday, according to exchange data. The selling added to pressure on the market ahead of Tuesday’s session.

The previous trading session had already ended on a weak note. The Sensex declined 382.62 points, or 0.50%, to 76,132.81, while the Nifty fell 118.55 points, or 0.50%, to 23,779.15. Twenty-three of the 30 Sensex stocks closed lower.

Information technology stocks faced some of the steepest losses, with Infosys falling 3.81%. Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, UltraTech Cement and Tata Consultancy Services also ended lower, while Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, Maruti and Power Grid posted gains.

Asian markets delivered mixed signals on Tuesday. South Korea’s Kospi and Taiwan’s benchmark gained, while Hong Kong and Australia declined. Japan’s Nikkei and Shanghai also traded higher, offering some support to regional sentiment despite weakness elsewhere.

Crude oil remains a key factor for the stock market today, September 8 2026. Brent crude rose 0.05% to $97.05 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 1.03% to $92.42. Concerns around the Strait of Hormuz are adding a risk premium to energy prices.
