Railway Ticket Booking UPI Charge Above Rs 2,000 From October 15

Railway Ticket Booking UPI Charge Above Rs 2,000 From October 15

The railway ticket booking UPI charge above Rs 2,000 will change from October 15, 2026, when the new Merchant Discount Rate framework takes effect. For railway ticket payments above ₹2,000, a flat ₹5 MDR will apply instead of the standard 0.4 per cent rate used for most eligible merchant transactions.

The important point for passengers is that the ₹5 charge will not be added to the ticket bill. Railway officials have said the cost will be borne on the merchant side, meaning passengers can continue paying the displayed ticket amount through UPI.

Under the new IRCTC UPI payment rules, railway ticketing has been placed in a special category along with selected services such as fuel, insurance and telecom payments. These categories will have a flat ₹5 MDR for eligible transactions above ₹2,000 rather than the general 0.4 per cent charge.

For example, if a passenger books a ticket costing ₹2,500 through UPI, the payment remains ₹2,500. The separate ₹5 MDR is charged within the payment ecosystem rather than being added to the passenger’s transaction.

The broader UPI framework applies to person-to-merchant payments above ₹2,000. Person-to-person transfers remain outside the MDR system, while payments of ₹2,000 or less to eligible merchants remain protected from the new charge.

The railway ticket booking UPI charge above Rs 2,000 therefore does not mean higher railway fares. The ticket price, reservation charges, and other applicable railway fees remain separate from the MDR introduced for digital payments.

The change is mainly relevant to the payment system used by IRCTC and railway services. Existing IRCTC information currently lists UPI payments as having no transaction charge, but the new framework is scheduled to change the treatment of qualifying merchant transactions from October 15.

The IRCTC UPI payment rules will come into effect on October 15, after which eligible high-value UPI transactions will be processed under the revised MDR framework.

For passengers, the main thing to remember is simple: a railway ticket costing more than ₹2,000 and paid through UPI will attract the ₹5 merchant-side MDR, but that amount is not supposed to be passed on as an additional passenger charge.
